Introduction

Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba in 1942 after he combined a variety of martial arts. These martial arts were a combination of Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, Kendo, Aiki Jutsu and Aiki-budo.

When translated to modern English, "Ai" means "peace", "ki" means spirit and "do" means the path or the right way. "Aikido" means "the path of the spirit of peace". Morihei Ueshiba gave it this name after it's smooth, spear-like movements.

Aikido should not in any case be presumed to be like any other martial art. The movements and techniques are a lot smoother than many martial arts and contact during training is usually gentle. If you feel in any way nervous, Aikido can usually be taken very gently to insure you receive the best quality training for you.

Although Aikido is a martial art, there are no competitions. There are however 18 coloured grades in junior Aikido classes. Aikido is a martial art which allows one to learn to defend themselves and not compete against other Dojo's.
